Stone pipes allow items to flow normally. Items that have been accelerated by a gold pipe will slow slower than if it were in a cobblestone pipe.

Cobblestone pipes allow items to flow normally. However items that have been accelerated by a gold pipe will slow faster than if it were in a stone pipe.

Iron pipes act as a one way pipe only allowing pipes to flow through the hollow side, will all the sides that are filled in will block items.
